Unveiling the Mystery: How Long Does Microblading Last for the Perfect Look?

Do you want to wake up every day with perfectly shaped, filled brows without having to reach for your makeup?  Then microblading could be the solution for you.  A semi-permanent solution to your brow woes – But how long does microblading last?

In this post we’ll cover everything you should know about microblading and how to get the most out of this treatment!

What is Microblading?

Mircoblading is a semi-permanent make up treatment where a trained brow technician uses a machine to implant pigment into the epidermal layer of your skin mimicking hairstrokes, giving you natural looking brows that frame your face.

This low maintenance, flawless result will give you brows that don’t require shaping and filling daily.

How long does Microblading last?

On average, the results from this treatment will last between 12-18 months before a colour boost is required.  But this can vary depending on skin type, aftercare and lifestyle.  For some the pigment may fade after one year, others can see results lasting for up to two years.

Microblading is considered a semi-permanent treatment as, unlike traditional tattooing, the pigment will fade over time.

What affects Microblading longevity?

There are several factors to consider here:

1. Skin Type

What skin type you have will play a big part in the longevity of your results

  • Oily skin may require touch ups sooner as pigment will break down faster causing strokes to blur more quickly

  • Dry or normal skin will typically hold pigment for longer before a colour boost is required

2. Aftercare

Your aftercare routine can make or break your microblading results.  Your brow artist will give you specific aftercare instructions for the days and weeks following your treatment with any aftercare products that are required during the healing process.  The instructions are usually to avoid water, steam, perspiration and makeup initially and to apply your aftercare products routinely.

Following this aftercare advice is essential to allow the pigment to settle into your skin.  If you neglect the aftercare process, pigment can fade more prematurely, requiring more frequent top ups.

3. Exposure to the Sun

UV rays can cause pigment to fade much faster so you must protect your skin and brows for them to last longer using SPF, sunglasses and/or wear a hat.

4. Touch-Up Appointment

After your initial microblading treatment, you are required to have a touch-up appointment 6-8 weeks later when your brows are healed from the first session.  This is a crucial appointment to perfect your brows and add any pigment where it may be required.

5. Your Lifestyle

If you are a frequent gym goer, love outdoor sports or live in a more humid climate – your pigment can fade more quickly – oil and excess moisture can affect how long your results will last.  Following your aftercare instructions and advice are crucial during the healing process.

What happens when Microblading starts to fade?

You will notice the pigment in your brows will become less crisp, lighten in colour and take on a more powdered look instead of the hairlike strokes that were visible after your first treatments.  This happens gradually, over time and when you start to notice more significant fading it’s time to book your colour boost treatment.

Can you extend the life of your Microblading?

Although fading of pigment is inevitable, there are some helpful things you can do afterwards to make them last longer:

  1. Follow Brow Artists Aftercare Instructions: Following your aftercare advice is critical for longer lasting results.  Keeping the brow area dry and avoiding the urge to pick at the skin as it is healing are crucial during the healing process.

  2. Wear Sunscreen: You should apply sunscreen daily and/or opt to wearing a hat to protect your brows from UV rays

  3. Avoid Certain Skincare Products: These should be avoided – skincare containing exfoliants and retinol as ingredients in them can cause pigment to fade faster

  4. Schedule Regular Colour Boosts: As your pigment starts to fade, ensure you book your colour boost appointment to keep your brows fresh.  This way you will not require a full treatment at full treatment cost.

When to schedule your Colour Boost

This is entirely up to you!  While some people will get the full 18 months out of their results and wait until they see significant pigment fade, others prefer to have a colour boost between 6-12 months to maintain their fresh, crisp hairlike strokes.  Most brow artists offer a sliding pricing scale to reflect these colour boosts timings to avoid you paying for a full treatment every 24 months.  It’s when you notice your colour fading that you should book your colour boost.

Is Microblading worth it?

If you’re tired of using makeup to fill your brows everyday and/or struggling to keep them in shape, then YES – it is entirely worth it!  The results are flawless and natural looking while being low maintenance.

With the correct aftercare and regular colour boosts, your brows will look perfect for up to two years.  It is an investment but if you’re ready for perfect, defined brows then microblading really is something you will not regret!
